Final Series: Tritons Sweep Sunsets For 3rd Straight Crown
September 19, 2019 (Federal League Wire Service)
The
Tri-Cities Tritons won the Championship Final Series for the third
consecutive season, and the sixth time in the last seven
campaigns, by completing a three games to none sweep of the
Sunrise Sunsets with a 15-9 win in Game 3. It was also the Water
Dwellers third straight sweep of the Twilighters in the series. The
Tritons scored four runs in the fifth to wipe out a 7-4 deficit,
and added four more runs in the sixth. John
Hardardt started for the Sons on Poseidon and lasted four and a
third innings. Hardardt allowed three earned runs on seven hits.
Calvin Rayburn tossed four and two thirds innings of relief,
permitting two runs on two hits. Rayburn, who struck out 11 and
walked one, got credit for the win, his fifth of the post season. Jimmy
Schariest started for the Sunsets and took the loss after yielding
eight runs on seven hits and three walks in five innings. The
Tritons took an early 4-0 lead. A two run single by Mike LaManna
in the first and a two run home run by Jay Warman in the second
accounted for the runs. The 'Sets tied the game in the third. A
Triton error and a three run home run by Javier Aguilar tied the
score. In
the top of the fifth, the Sunsets broke the tie and grabbed a
three run advantage. A sacrifice fly by Aguilar and an RBI
single by George Negron aided the Sunsets' cause. The
lead was short lived, however, as in the bottom of the fifth the
Tritons took an 8-7 lead. A two run single by LaManna, a run
scoring single by Jayven Miller, and an RBI ground out by Agner
Martinez put the Tritons in front for good. The Water Dwellers
added four more in the sixth. Gabe Gonzalez singled and eventually
scored on a wild pitch. Tre Dingus singled in two runs, and
Rayburn doubled in a run. Trailing
12-7 the Sunsets rallied in the top of the seventh. Nick Arata
singled, stole second, advanced to third on a ground ball, and
scored on a wild pitch. Chris Price singled in a run, bringing the
'Sets to within 12-9. In
the bottom of the seventh, the Tritons capped the scoring by
picking up three insurance runs. Warman doubled in a pair of runs,
and Chris Marrero singled in Warman. Dingus
led the Tritons with three hits and two RBI. Warman, LaManna,
Miller, and Gonzalez had two hits each. LaManna drove in four
runs, as did Warman. Arata's three hits paced the Twilighters.
Price, Schariest, and Negron added two hits a piece. Aguilar drove
in four runs. The
editors of South Florida Baseball Report named
Calvin Rayburn of the Tritons as the MVP of the playoffs. Rayburn
went 5-0 in the post season. The
Tritons became only the third team in league history to win three
consecutive championships more than once. Game
2 Recap-Tritons Trap Twilighters: The
Tri-Cities Tritons took a commanding two games to none lead in the
Championship Final Series as they defeated the Sunrise Sunsets,
4-1, in Game 2 of the best of five series. Jose
Marcano outdueled Brant Spring in a pitcher's duel. Marcano went
the distance and allowed one run on six hits. Spring was charged
with four runs on eight hits in a complete game effort. Marcano
walked five and struck out 12. Spring walked two, hit one, and
fanned six. The
Sunsets stranded 11 runners on base, including seven in scoring
position. The
Tritons took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. With one out,
Chris Marrero singled and went to second when Zac Miller was hit
by a pitch. Tre Dingus drew a walk to load the bases and Marrero
scored on a sacrifice fly by Calvin Rayburn. After Mike LaManna
walked to reload the bases, Agner Martinez singled to right center
to drive in two runs. In
the top of the third, Martinez singled and scored on an RBI double
by Gabe Gonzalez, giving the Sons of Poseidon a 4-0 advantage. The
Sunsets picked up their lone run in the bottom of the fifth.
Brandon Hull drew a two out walk, stole second, and then scored on
an RBI double by Chris Price. A
key, and controversial, play occurred in the bottom of the eighth.
With one out, Javier Aguilar singled and Jimmy Schariest walked,
bringing the potential tying run to the plate. Tommy Tritz hit a
liner to short center field for which Agner Martinez dove. Umpire
Steve Birnburg ruled that Martinez caught the ball, while the
Sunsets felt that Martinez lost the ball as his glove hit the
ground. In the confusion, Aguilar was thrown out between second
and third and, after a brief argument, a double play was ruled as
the result. The
Sunsets voiced their displeasure with the call. Chris Price was
ejected after the double play was called and Hull was ejected as
the game concluded an inning later. Martinez
and John Haritan led the Tritons with two hits a piece. Price had
two hits for the 'Sets. Frustrated
by the rulings and the results, the Sunsets will seek to avoid
being swept by the Tritons as the series continues with Game 3,
scheduled for Thursday. Game
1 Highlights-Tritons Trip Twilighters: The
Tri-Cities Tritons and the Sunrise Sunsets squared off in the
Championship Final Series for
the sixth consecutive season and the Water Dwellers took Game 1
with a 10-5 victory over the Twilighters. Calvin
Rayburn, despite having suffered a deep gash on his left hand as a
result of a dog bite, got the opening assignment for the Tritons
and responded with a complete game win. Rayburn scattered nine
hits, walked one, hit one, and struck out 13. Jimmy
Schariest started for the pitching depleted Sunsets and absorbed
the loss. The
Tritons did all of their damage in just two innings, the second
and third. After the 'Sets took a 2-0 lead on solo home runs by
Chris Price, in the first, and Elijah Rodriguez in the second, the
Tritons grabbed the lead for good in the bottom of the second. Jay
Warman drew a bases loaded walk and Zac Miller delivered a two run
single as the Sons of Poseidon took a 3-2 advantage. After
Rayburn pitched out of a jam by striking out the side with runners
on second and third in the top of the third, the Tritons poured
across seven more runs in the home half of the frame. Gabe
Gonzalez had an RBI double, Miller had a run scoring single,
Rayburn drove in two with a triple, and Mike LaManna singled in
Rayburn. Despite
trailing by eight runs, the Sunsets showed no quit, picking up
single runs in the fourth and fifth. An
RBI single by Anthony Garcilazo in the top of the ninth closed out
the scoring. Warman,
Miller, LaManna, and Chris Marrero led the Tritons with two hits a
piece. Price and Rodriguez paced the 'Sets with two hits each. The
Sunsets will look to even up the best of five series, while the
Tritons will look for a commanding two game lead, in Game 2,
scheduled for Tuesday night.
