Grading The Draft, Team By Team

March 13, 2016 (Federal League Wire Service)

                The pre-season draft meetings ended late Wednesday night as team representatives filed out of the meeting room at the Federal League Conference Annex. 37 players were drafted and all are hoping to make an impact when play opens during the week of April 17.
                Ben Tomchick, a right handed pitcher from Fort Lauderdale, drafted by the Hallandale Twins, was the first player selected in the draft.

A complete list of the draft results can be found here.

Original Division:

Hallandale Twins:
 Ben Tomchick, RHP; Devin Short, SS/OF; Jeff Lynch, RHP/3B; Nelson Quintero, OF; Ryan O' Neil, 2B; Mike Butkus, 3B/SS; Javier Oliveros, C/1B

                The Twins drafted extensively and addressed their depth issues.
                This would be an excellent class, but for the fact that Tomchick, the first overall pick, will not be available this season.
                Grade: B

Sunrise Sunsets: Carlos Ciriaco, 2B; Jose Luis Diaz, RHP/INF; Manuel Daboin, C/3B/OF
                Ciriaco, young and still evolving, could be a star in the making. Diaz displays strong potential to contribute right away. Daboin will contribute at a variety of positions.
                This was a small, but stellar, draft by the Twilighters.
                Grade: B+

Delray Beach Mudcats: Felix Fidalgo, OF; Chris Jones, SS/2B
                The Mudcats did not have a pick in either of the first two rounds, a result of last season's big trade with the Goliaths.
                Fidalgo and Jones represent the best players available in the team's positions of need. All things considered, this is a good draft.
                Grade:

Broward Cubs: Delancius Black, OF; Isaac Rodriguez, OF; David Hughes, RHP/OF
                The Cubs needed outfield help and got two top prospects. Rodriguez may also contribute on the hill
                Black and Rodriguez will get an opportunity to contribute immediately. Hughes was a no-show when spring camp opened.
                Grade: B+

Expansion Division:

Margate Sentries: Danny Marte, RHP/INF; Felix Martinez, RHP/OF; Nick Samko, 2B/OF;
                The Sentries traded away their first round pick during last season and took a gamble of some long range prospects that may be difficult to sign.
                Talent-wise, this would be a pretty good crop, but, the Gatekeepers needed immediate help and probably will not be getting it.
                Grade: C-

Hollywood Stars: Anthony Alexander, SS; Osvaldo Capote, OF; Amaury Perez, 2B; Josue Gutierrez, OF; Adrian Giraldo, LHP/1B; Oscar Pizzano, RHP/2B; Hernan Perez, 3B; Glenn Persad, INF/OF, Dred Rolle, 2B/OF

                The Stars drafted both quantity and quality in Matt Leban's first campaign at the helm.
                Alexander is a top prospect and all of the other show strong promise.
                Grade: B+

Tri-Cities Tritons: Marcelo Jimenez, RHP/INF; Deion Rosalia, 3B; Stephen Winklaar, 2B/OF; Guillermo Quintana, OF

                The Tritons, after two consecutive trips to the Championship Final Series, are reloading on the fly.
                Jimenez could contribute immediately. If Rosalia signs, he will, likely, take control of the hot corner for the Water Dwellers. Winklaar and Quintana have terrific raw athletic ability and could certainly dent the lineup.
                Grade: A-

Davie Goliaths: Matt Niedzwiecki, RHP; Mike Young, C/3B; Luis Mazzei, INF; Mark Lovecchio, OF; Jonathan Kramer, OF; Brett Smith, 2B; Daniel Perez, 2B;

                The Goliaths' roster need a bit of an overhaul, even after posting the best record in the league last season.
                Niedzwiecki could emerge as a staff ace, and is already signed. Young is certain to make an immediate impression. Kramer and Lovecchio could win starting outfield spots. Smith and Perez are solid additions, making this the best draft this season
                Grade: A
