Grading
The Draft, Team By Team
October 6, 2019 (Federal League Wire Service)
The pre-season draft meetings were
held last month. 40 players were drafted
and all are hoping to make an impact when play opens this fall.
The Hollywood Stars led the way with nine selections. The
Tri-Cities Tritons and Sunrise Sunsets both made only two picks.
A complete list of the draft results can be found here.
Original Division
Fort Lauderdale Atlantics: Jesse Simicich, RHP/SS;
Ismael Bautista, 2B/OF; John Tomasek, OF; Michael Bruser, 3B/OF Summary:
Simicich is a top of the rotation starter that made this a
strong class. Bautista's bat packs some much needed punch.
Tomasek and Bruser were both longshots to dent the lineup. Grade:
B+
Hallandale Twins: Nelson
Alvarenga, RHP; Logan Stiles,
1B/OF; Matt Chikerotis, RHP/OF; Lazaro Luzardo, OF; Jose
Batista, OF; Victor Carpente, 2B; Jorge Castro, C; Ricardo Suarez,
RHP/1B Summary: The Twins selected and signed two
pitchers, Alvarenga and Chikerotis, that will make an immediate
impact of the team's thin staff. Carpente flashes a good glove,
but needs to be able to show more with the bat. Stiles could have
been a solid middle of the order bat, but he decided that he was
not ready to play at this level. Grade: C+
Broward Cubs: Bayardo Arias, LHP; Lionel Rubio,
Jr., 1B/OF; Steven White, 1B/OF; Luis Horta, SS; Jacob Kaiser,
OF; Billy Creutz,
SS; Enmanuael Lebon, SS Summary: If the Cubs sign Arias for
the season, this will be a very good draft. Adding solid bats like
Rubio and White will help the offensive production. Kaiser could
crack the lineup if he signs. Grade: B-
Sunrise Sunsets:
Osduar Moreno, LHP; Bryan Rosenberg, LHP/1B
Summary:
The Twilighters got the pitching prospect they wanted in Moreno,
wound up trading him to the Stars for the negotiating rights to
veteran Peter Maestrales.
Adding Rosenberg would be a plus. Grade: C
Expansion
Division
Davie Goliaths: Jhoendri
Herrera, RHP; Robert Antunez, INF; Bryan Vargas, SS/OF;
Charlie Basantes, OF;
Juan Deus, 1B/OF*
Summary: The Philistines were able to get a top of the
rotation starter and added a dynamic infielder with a strong bat. The G-Men also picked
wisely in the later rounds, parlaying corner infielder Deus into
speedy outfielder Isaac Zinguer in a trade with the Stars.
Grade: A
Hollywood Stars: John
Chengary, LHP/OF*; Sammy Caldes, INF; Everett Miller, RHP; Jose
Alvarez, RHP/SS; Carlos Marin, INF/OF; Hector Rivera, C; Edgardo
Castro, INF/OF; Terrence Biel, OF; Kevin Morales, 2B Summary: The Stars
need help all over the field and they drafted three solid pitching
prospects in Chengary, Alvarez, and Miller. Chengary was
subsequently traded in a deal to reacquire hitting star Osvaldo
Capote. Rivera will, likely,
represent an upgrade at catcher. Caldes could crack the starting
lineup by opening day. Marin and Castro would have been useful additions if they signed. Having only Miller, Caldes, and Rivera
signed so far, holds down the grade of an, otherwise, strong
draft.
Grade: B+
Margate Sentries:
Lazaro Amable, OF; Jeremy Becker, OF; Marco Llamozas, 1B
Summary: Amable is a 21 year old outfielder that will add depth to
the defense. Llamozas can develop. Becker is an intriguing
prospect that shows a good lefty bat, but is still unsigned,
despite some initial, but incorrect, reports to the contrary.
Grade: C+
Tri-Cities
Tritons:
Sev Arakelian, OF*; Kevin Clermont, INF Summary: The Water Dwellers
traded Arakelian to the Cubs in exchange for veteran outfielder
Jorge Caballero. Clermont, still unsigned, looks like a long shot
to make the team Grade: C-
*denotes player traded.
Players listed in italics are
unsigned.
