Grading The Draft, Team By Team

August 22, 2021 (Federal League Wire Service)

The pre-season draft meetings took place last week. 32 players were drafted and many of them will appear on their teams' Opening Day rosters.
The Davie Goliaths, who held two first round picks, selected catcher James McDonnell with the first overall pick before nabbing right handed pitcher Jessey Belanger later in the first round.
The Hollywood Stars declined to pick, while the Davie Goliaths, for the second straight season led all teams with eight selections. The Hallandale Twins made seven selections, the Fort Lauderdale Atlantics chose six players.

A complete list of the draft results can be found here.

Original Division:

Fort Lauderdale Atlantics: Elijah Rodriguez, C; Jared Jimenez, OF/3B; Reynaldo Leon, RHP; Matthew Beuka, RHP/OF; Zachary Taylor, 1B; Fred Rodriguez, RHP/1B

Last season's trades put the Atlantics in a bit of a bind as they need to replenish their roster, but had sent some picks away last season. Nevertheless, getting a strong catching prospect in Rodriguez and a useful starting pitcher in Leon is helpful.
Jimenez and Beuka will have the opportunity to compete for starting roles.
        Grade: B-

Broward Cubs: Alfonso Guillen, INF; Jorge Luis Fernandez, RHP; Lazaro Amable, OF; Jose Batista, OF*

This might be the best draft the Cubs have had in the McEwen era. Four players that will almost certainly be contributors in the coming season. All four address immediate team needs, and Fernandez was the top pitcher in the entire draft class. All four are already signed.
         Grade: A

Sunrise Sunsets: Dominic Ciero. RHP/3B; Enzo Nelson, 3B; Sthevens Gonzalez, OF

The Sunsets made three strong selections. Ciero is a quality hurler that will help the team immediately. Nelson is an accomplished power bat that will bolster the lineup. If all three players sign, advance this mark by a full grade.
         Grade: B

Hallandale Twins: Jose Garcia, RHP; Melchior B. Feliciano, C/1B*; Melchior Feliciano, Jr. 2B; Joel Fernandez, 2B/OF; Jon Williams, 1B/OF; Joshua Peabody, OF; Jose Luis Penton, OF/2B

The Twins needed a front line pitcher and they got him in Garcia. Now, they need to sign him. The remainder of the class are mostly depth picks. The final mark goes up a full grade if they sign Garcia.
         Grade: C

Expansion Division:

Davie Goliaths: James McDonnell, C/OF; Jessey Belanger, RHP/OF; Cain Ruiz, OF; Shamar Vance, OF; Kenny Jenkins, OF; Jorge Quintero, INF; Giomar Fabio Fernandez, OF; Sergio Perez, 2B

The Goliaths addressed their pitching and catching needs as best that they could, once again, relying on the team's long term strategy of making safe, signable, picks. If Ruiz, one of the best bats in the entire class, signs, this is a very solid draft.
        Grade: B-

Tri-Cities Tritons: Brayden Berry, C; Antonio Russo, RHP/OF

The Tritons needed to bolster their catching corps and got the best available option in the 21 year old Berry. Russo, on the other hand, presents as a long term project because of his youth and inexperience, despite possessing a plus arm, .
        Grade: C+

Margate Sentries: Amhed Rivero, RHP

The Sentries traded most of their picks for first baseman Jorge Correa, but did manage to snag a 23 year old righty with a high ceiling. The inside word is that Rivero will be tough to sign, however.
        Grade: D

Hollywood Stars: none selected.

For the second consecutive season, the Stars will rely on their own scouting network to find prospects and did not make any selections.
        Grade: N/A

Players listed in italics are still unsigned.
