Bocaneers Notch 2nd Straight Title

January 28, 2008 (Federal League Wire Service)

The Boca Raton Bocaneers became the first team to win the Celestial Division championship two seasons in a row after recording an 11-9 win over the Palm Beach Royals in the third and final game of the Celestial Series.
Eric Bingham's two out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh tied the score at 9-9 and then Tracy Greenbaum singled in Bingham with the go ahead run. The 'Neers went on to add an insurance run in the eighth.
The game was a back and forth affair that began with the teams trading three run rallies in the first inning and then each getting single runs in the second.
A third inning RBI single by Eric Raskin gave the Bocaneers a 5-4 lead, but the Royals countered with two runs in the fifth on RBI singles by Julio Rodriguez and Darren Saliva.
In the bottom of the sixth, Greenbaum, Jimmy Dingus, and Ryan Lohnes, who had hit a three run home run in the first, each singled in a run to give the Corsairs an 8-6 lead. The Royals responded with three runs of their own in the top of the seventh, taking the lead on Bill Calla's two run single.
Jimmy Dingus started for the Bocaneers and pitched seven innings to earn the win. Doc Guida retired all six batters he faced to pick up the save.
Ben Anderson started for the Royals, but only lasted into the second. Brett Lancaster, who had three hits for the Royals, pitched six and a third innings of relief and took the loss.
In addition to their back to back titles, the Bocaneers became the first team to win the championship three times.
Celestial Division Finals-Game 2: The Palm Beach Royals sent the Celestial Division Finals to a third and final game after notching a 7-3 win over the defending champion Boca Raton Bocaneers.
Brett Lancaster pitched a complete game 11 hitter, walking three, and striking out three, for the victors.
Jimmy Dingus started for the 'Neers and took the loss, allowing five earned runs on nine hits in eight innings.
A four run rally in the fourth inning turned a 3-2 Royals' lead into a rout. Rocky Garcia had an RBI single and Jason Burns had a two run base hit to key the inning.
Ben Anderson led the Royals with three hits. Burns drove in three runs.
Jon Solovy, Michael Martin, Eric Bingham, and Brad Weiss paced the Bocaneers with two hits each.
The Royals triumphed despite committing six errors.
The third and deciding game will be played on Sunday.
Celestial Division Finals-Game 1: The Boca Raton Bocaneers took a giant step toward defending the championship crown with a 9-7 win over the Palm Beach Royals in Game 1 of the best of three Celestial Division finals.
Anthony Tomasi started for the Corsairs and pitched five strong innings, allowing four runs on just one hit, to earn the win. Tomasi was wild, walking five and hitting one, but struck out 12.
Kevin Brown worked out of an eighth inning jam and then pitched a perfect ninth to gain credit for a save. Brown surrendered one hit and struck out three in one and a third innings.
Burt Anderson started for the Royals and took the loss after permitting five runs, but only one earned, on two hits in four innings. Anderson walked five and fanned one.
The Royals opened the scoring in the top of the first as a near capacity crowd was settling into their seats. After Brett Lancaster worked out a leadoff walk, Anderson doubled him home. After a wild pitch advanced him to third, Anderson scored one batter later on an RBI groundout by Jason Burns.
The 'Neers tied the score in the home half of the frame on Tomasi's RBI single and a run scoring passed ball.
In the third, the Corsairs took the lead for good with a three run outburst. A pair of errors and a two run single by Jimmy Dingus gave the Swashbucklers a 5-2 advantage.
The Royals cut the deficit to 5-4 in the fourth as Tomasi wild pitched in one run and hit Julio Rodriguez with a pitch with the bases loaded to force in another run.
The Bocaneers picked up three insurance runs in the sixth as Ryan Lohnes drew a bases loaded walk, Tomasi was hit by a pitch with the sacks full, and Jimmy Dingus drove in Jon Solovy with a sacrifice fly.
In the seventh, the Royals answered back with two runs to cut the gap to 8-7 as Rodriguez and pinch hitter Casey Nielsen both singled in runs, but the 'Neers countered with a run in the eighth to cap the scoring.
The Royals will be seeking to extend the series to a third and final game, while the Bocaneers will be looking to wrap up their second straight title as the series continues with Game 2, scheduled for Sunday at Sabal Pines Park.
Celestial Division Play-In-Royals Oust Tribe: The Palm Beach Royals rallied from a three run deficit and withstood two rain delays before defeating the Coconut Creek Indians in a 16-11 shootout to advance to the Celestial Division Finals.
Brett Lancaster pitched a complete game for the Royals and picked up the win despite allowing five earned runs on 10 hits. Lancaster walked two, hit five, and struck out nine while braving the wet and slippery conditions.
Justin Shiver started for the Tribe and took the loss.
The Royals took the lead for good with a five run rally in the rain interrupted fifth inning. Duane Lancaster worked out a bases loaded walk just after play resumed to start the rally. Lancaster had two hits and two RBI for the game.
Brett Lancaster, Darren Saliva, and Brad Monaco led the Royals with three hits each. Monaco's long two run home run to center in the eighth inning punctuated the victory.
Gabe Cordova paced the Tribe with three hits.
The Royals will now meet the defending champion Boca Raton Bocaneers in the best of three Celestial Series, scheduled to begin after the holiday break.
