Shutout Sentries To Win Series
September 8, 2021 (Federal League Wire Service)
For
the first time in the past 32 seasons, the Hollywood Stars
captured the league title. The Stars whitewashed the Margate
Sentries, 7-0, in Game 4 of the Championship Final Series to claim
the fourth crown in team history.
After withstanding a brief rain delay, the Stars sent Nector
Ramirez to the mound to oppose David Marquez for the Gatekeepers.
Both pitchers tossed goose eggs through the first three frames,
but, in the fourth, the Stars broke through.
Jesus Delgado led off with a sharp double to center and was safe
at third when Sentries' shortstop Humberto Valor chose to try to
retire the lead runner on Eddie Llovera's grounder. After Freiburg
Marin was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Brett Fick's double to
left center scored Delgado and Llovera, putting the Stars in
front, 2-0. Justin Jordan followed with a two run single that gave
Ramirez and the Stars a four run cushion.
In
the seventh, the Stars increased their advantage to 7-0. Jordan
drew a one out walk and moved to second on a base hit by Albert
Carbonell. Austin Armstrong walked to load the bases and Stefan
Leclerc singled, bringing home Jordan. Carbonell was out at the
plate, trying to score on the play. Ramirez then singled in a run,
and the final run of the game, and the season, came plateward on a
throwing error.
Angher
Cespedes pitched the eighth and worked out of a first and third
jam to keep the shutout intact. Mike Murray worked the ninth and
got Osvaldo Martinez to fly out to center for the final out.
Ramirez got the win, tossing seven innings. Ramirez permitted two
hits, walked three, and struck out eight. Marquez took the loss,
allowing six earned runs on seven hits in six and two thirds
innings.
Delgado's two hits led the Stars. Steven Romero had two of the
Sentries' three hits.
Angher Cespedes,
who pitched 22 and a third innings in the post season and recorded
three wins without a loss, was named the Playoff MVP by the
editors of South Florida Baseball Report.
For
the Stars, and manager Ryan Snyder, the win was the culmination of
a two season roller coaster ride that ended at the very top of the
league's highest hill.
Stars
Storm Sentries In Pivotal Third Game: The Hollywood Stars moved to within one win of capturing the league title as they romped to a 13-2 win over the Margate Sentries in Game 3 of the best of five Championship Final Series.
After withstanding a 49 minute delay due to lightning, the Stars saw the Sentries take a third inning 1-0 lead when Osvaldo Martinez drew a bases loaded walk. In the bottom of the third, the Stars responded with nine runs.
With one out, Carlos Fluerry singled and then stole second. Ryan Reilly tied the game with an RBI single. Eddie Llovera's single sent Reilly to third. After Llovera stole second, Freiburg Marin and Brett Fick both drew walks, sending Reilly home with the go ahead run. Justin Jordan singled in another run, and Albert Carbonell doubled in two, ending Sentries' starter David Marquez's night.
The rally continued as Stefan Leclerc singled in a pair of runners, Austin Armstrong had an RBI double, and Ryan Snyder produced a run scoring single.
In the top of the fourth, Alex Rodriguez singled, Jorge Michelena walk, and Steven Romero singled to load the bases. Rodriguez scored when Frank Cruz bounced into a force play, but that was all the Gatekeepers would get.
The Stars added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Jordan had a sacrifice fly. Carbonell singled in a run, and Snyder singled in two.
Carbonell and Snyder led the Stars with two hits and three RBI each. Juan Rodriguez had three hits for the Sentries.
Angher Cespedes started for the Stars and allowed two runs on six hits in four innings. Mike Murray tossed two innings of scoreless relief and was awarded the win. Marquez was charged with seven runs on five hits and two walks in two and a third innings and took the loss.
The Stars can claim the fourth championship in team history, and the first in 32 seasons, with a win in Game 4.
Sentries
Rally To Even Series With Win In Game 2: After
falling behind 4-0 in the fourth, the Margate Sentries rallied for
three runs in the bottom of the fourth and got three more in the
fifth as they defeated the Hollywood Stars, 6-4, tying the best of
Championship Final Series at one win a piece.
Raul Ascanio started for the Gatekeepers and labored through five
innings, but emerged with the win. Ascanio allowed three earned
runs on four hits. Ascanio walked four and fanned four.
Justin Jordan started for the Stars and wound up taking the loss
after surrendering two earned runs on 10 hits in five innings.
Jordan issued one walk and struck out three.
The
Stars, who were the league's best defensive team during the
regular season, committed five errors.
In
the top of the first, Eddie Llovera led off with a base hit,
Stefan Leclerc drew a walk, but was erased on a force play, hit
into by Freiburg Marin, Llovera scored on a ground out by Albert
Carbonell. Marin scored on a wild pitch.
In the second, the Stars increased their lead to 3-0. Carlos
Fluerry singled, went to second on a balk, and scored on an RBI
single by Ryan Reilly.
The Stars made it 4-0 in the fourth when Ryan Snyder walked, took
second on a passed ball, and scored on a throwing error.
Just
when it looked like the game, and the series might slip out of
reach for the Sentries, the Gatekeepers scored three runs in the
bottom of the fourth. After an error opened the door, Steven
Romero delivered a two run single. In the fifth, two more errors
and an RBI single by Rafael Lara put the Guardsmen in front.
Humberto
Valor relieved Ascanio and shut the Stars down for the final four
innings to earn the save. Valor permitted only two hits, walked
none, hit a batter, and struck out four.
The Stars had only one batter reach second base against Valor, and
the reliever picked him off for the third out of the seventh.
Juan
Rodriguez, Romero, and Lara led the Sentries with two hits a
piece. Fluerry's two hits were tops for the Stars.
The
series continues with the pivotal Game 3, scheduled for Wednesday.
Stars
Stomp Sentries In Game 1: The
Hollywood Stars took the opening game of the best of five
Championship Final Series as they defeated the Margate Sentries,
9-4.
After scoring a run in the top of the first on an RBI single by
Osvaldo Martinez, things immediately went south for the
Gatekeepers as starting pitcher Cesar Loaiza could not record an
out by leaving with an elbow injury. Loaiza walked leadoff batter
Eddie Llovera and then went 3-0 on second batter Freiburg Marin
before exiting. Alex Rodriguez entered in relief and, after
retiring Brett Fick on a ground out, allowed a sacrifice fly to
Justin Jordan that tied the score.
In the second, the Sentries moved ahead, 2-1, in the top of the
frame as David Marquez doubled in Rodriguez, but, on the play,
Rafael Lara rounded third too far and was caught off the base for
the third out. In the home half of the inning, the Stars took the
lead for good with a four run outburst.
After
Nector Ramirez drew a leadoff walk, Austin Armstrong tripled him
in to tie the score. With one out, Jesus Delgado doubled to left,
enabling Armstrong to score the go ahead run. Ryan Reilly followed
with a bunt single, and, after a fly out, Marin reached on an
error that put the Stars ahead, 5-2.
The
Sentries cut the gap to 5-4 in the third when Humberto Valor
singled and went to third on a double by Martinez. Both runners
scored on a throwing error.
A two run single by Marin in the fourth increased the Stars lead
to 7-4. Marin's sacrifice fly, along with an RBI single by Justin
Jordan, in the seventh capped the scoring.
Angher Cespedes, who won Game 3 of the Stars' semi-final series,
tossed six innings, permitting four runs, two earned, on six hits.
Cespedes, who retired the last 10 batters he faced, walked one and
struck out five. Mike Murray pitched three scoreless innings of
relief and earned a save.
Rodriguez
was charged with five runs, four earned, on six hits in three
innings and took the loss.
Marin's
three RBI and Delgado's three doubles led the Stars. Martinez and
Lara had two hit games for the Sentries.
The Stars left eight runners on base. The Sentries stranded four.
The Gatekeepers committed two errors to the Stars' one.
The
series continues with Game 2, scheduled for Monday.
