The Draft, Team By Team
June 29, 2020 (Federal League Wire Service)
The pre-season draft meetings took
place last week. 35 players were drafted
and all are hoping to make an impact when play opens as soon as
the local health authorities advise that it is safe to do
so.
After the Hallandale Twins took right hander Alejandro Martin, a
20 year old prospect from Sunrise, as the first overall selection
in the initial phase of the draft, the Broward Cubs made James McGrath, a right handed pitcher from
Boston College, the first overall pick in the secondary phase draft.
A complete list of the draft results can be found here.
Original
Division:
Broward Cubs: Omar Contreras,
SS/2B;
Terrence Biel,
OF; Luis Morad, OF; James McGrath, RHP/INF; Jose Batista, OF
The Cubs would have been a better team this season with
McGrath on the active roster now, but, for the future, this is
still a good pick.
Getting top pick, Contreras, and adding a solid outfielder in Biel
are key additions for the Cubs Grade:
B
Hallandale Twins: Alejandro
Martin, RHP; Elio Mercado, 2B; Tom Doenig, RHP/C/INF: Miguel
Collado, INF; Brian Valdes, INF/OF; Andy Miralles, C/1B;
Marlon Rodriguez, 1B; Carlos Viloria, 3B; Luis Cordova, OF/3B;
Jared Jimenez, OF
The Twins took 10 players and have already inked six of them. The
Fraternals, clearly, were sensing a need at the corners and have
addressed it with Collado, Rodriguez, and Viloria. Miralles may end up
as the league's top catching prospect. Jimenez has a chance to
crack the outfield rotation. If pitching prospect Martin, the
club's first round pick, delivers on his potential, he could
emerge as the team's number one starter.
Grade: A-
Sunrise
Sunsets: Matt Lopez, RHP/DH
The Twilighters took, what they felt, was the draft's best overall
prospect, even though, he may not be available to them this
season. Even as a future pick, Lopez is a solid choice.
Grade: B
Fort Lauderdale Atlantics: Hilario
Nava, 2B; Edgardo Castro, INF/OF; Carlos Campanur, INF; Kyle
Barrows, RHP/2B; Doug Robinson, LHP/1B;
Barrows and Robinson will provide instant depth to the mound
corps. Campanur has a chance to carve out a utility role. Nava and
Castro are still unsigned, but could have an impact if they do.
Grade: B-
Expansion Division:
Hollywood
Stars:
Randy Manesma, OF; Christian Faldetta, SS; Jossian Gonzalez,
OF; Elvin Espinal, RHP/3B; Montgomery Sheikhan, 1B; Norland
Llompart, RHP/OF
The Stars drafted one of the top shortstops in the draft in
Faldetta. Manesma and Gonzalez flash potential.
Llompart and Espinal can be useful options on an already deep
pitching staff.
Grade: C+
Davie Goliaths:
Rainier Martinez, SS/OF; Yan Carlos Copin, OF; Alex
Castillo, 1B; Joshua Williams, OF; Carlos Peralta, OF; Richard
Battle, RHP/1B
The G-Men got some good athletic prospects in Martinez and Copin.
Castillo and Williams both have tremendous potential. However, the
Philistines did not solve their immediate pitching and catching
needs.
Grade: C-
Margate Sentries: William Mesa, SS/2B;
Dylan Daniels, C/1B
Mesa has tons of potential, but looks tough to sign. Although they
were already loaded at the catcher position, Daniels was too good
looking of a prospect to pass up.
Grade: B-
Tri-Cities
Tritons:
none selected.
The Tritons, the league's deepest and most successful team did not
draft any players this season.
Grade: N/A
Players listed in italics are
still unsigned.
