Twins' Hamby Wins Dual MVP's: Adam Hamby, who led the
Hallandale Twins to a second place finish in the regular season
and their first ever Celestial Series championship won both the
regular season Most Valuable Player Award and the Playoff MVP.
Hamby hit .439 during the season and was tied for second in home
runs, tied for fifth in RBI, and tied for the lead in triples.
Hamby went 4-3 while pitching and compiled a 3.75 ERA. Hamby set
a division record by striking out 101 batters in 57 and two
thirds innings. In the playoffs Hamby went 3-0, adding eight
hits and three RBI in four games.
Tracy Greenbaum, Kevin Brown, and Jon Solovy of the Boca Raton Bocaneers finished second,
third, and fourth in the voting.
Brown Wins Best Pitcher Award: Kevin Brown, the Bocaneers'
ace lefty did win the division's Best Pitcher Award.
Brown went 4-0 with a league leading 2.13 ERA. Brown struck out
59 and walked only 10 in 38 innings.
Josh Eckert of the Palm Beach Royals was a distant second in the
voting. Adam Hamby, Brett Lancaster of the Oakland Park A's, and
Doc Guida of the Bocaneers finished third, fourth and fifth,
respectively.
Lanier Tabbed As Division's Best Manager: Sean Lanier,
who took over as manager of the Hallandale Twins on February 7
after Ed Bailey abruptly retired, was named the winner of the
division's Best Manager Award.
Lanier, who piloted the Twins to a 14-6 record after taking over
the team and who then skippered them to their first title,
outpointed Eric Raskin of the Bocaneers and Faran Fagan of the
Palm Beach Royals for the honor.
Bocaneers' Solovy Wins As Division's Best Newcomer Award: Jon
Solovy, catcher for the pennant winning Bocaneers won the Best
Newcomer Award. Solovy hit an impressive .462 for the season
while providing the Corsairs with first rate backstopping.
Solovy's steal of home on the season's last day clinched the
pennant for the 'Neers.
Josh Eckert of the Royals finished second in the voting.
Eckert's twin brother Jerod, a catcher for the Royals finished
third.
Monaco Of Royals Win Sportsmanship Award: Although, as
usual, there were many deserving candidates for the award, no league
observer could argue with the selection of Palm Beach Royals outfielder
Brad Monaco as winner of this season's
Sportsmanship Award.
In addition to turning in a fine rookie campaign in which he hit
.259 and played solidly defensively, Monaco exemplified the Federal League spirit in his
approach to the game and represented the league with class each
time he stepped on the field.

Celestial Series-Game 3, Twins Win Series With 10th Inning
Victory Over Bocaneers: The
Hallandale Twins won their first ever league championship with a
7-6 win over the Boca Raton Bocaneers, in 10 innings, in the
third and final game of the Celestial Division Finals.
Adam Hamby pitched all 10 innings for the Twins, striking out
17, including the side in the bottom of the tenth. Kevin Brown
went the distance for the Bocaneers and was the hard luck loser.
Hamby scored the go ahead run in the top of the tenth, scoring
from third on a passed ball after leading off the inning with
single.
The Bocaneers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when
Jon Solovy led off and reached on an error. Eric Raskin singled,
sending Solovy to third. Cory Rosner then appeared to have
single to right, but on the play Raskin injured his leg trying
to leap over the ball as it passed through the infield. With
Raskin prone on the infield, he was easily forced out at second.
Solovy scored on the play, leaving Rosner with an RBI force out
instead of a hit.
In the top of the third, the Twins tied the score. Danny Griffin
led off with a double off the left field fence and scored two
batters later as Danny Caserio doubled to almost the same spot.
The Bocaneers retook the lead in the bottom of the third. Tracy
Greenbaum connected for a one out double and eventually trotted
home on a wild pitch.
In the top of the fourth, the Twins went ahead 3-2. Roberto
Lastra led off with a single and then Hamby drew a walk. After
Sean Lanier flew out, Alex Cardenas walked to load the bases.
Danny Griffin lifted a fly ball to center that Tracy Greenbaum
lost in the late afternoon sky. The ball fell in for a single
with Lastra scoring on the play. Mike Connell drove in Hamby
with a ground out to first.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Bocaneers reclaimed the lead
with a three run rally. An RBI single by Steve Daglia and three
wild pitches by Hamby put the Corsairs ahead, 5-3.
The Twins got one run back in the seventh when Dennis Morra was
hit by a pitch and then stole second before scoring on an error
off the bat of Tony Caserio. When Caserio was out trying to
advance all the way to third, he argued the call and was ejected
from the game.
A two run rally in the top of the eighth put the Twins in front,
6-5. With the bases loaded and two out and a full count on the
batter, Danny Caserio beat out a chopper up the middle as Hamby
scored the tying run from third and Griffin scored the go ahead
run from second.
After pitching out of a jam in the bottom of the eighth, Hamby
and the Twins were three outs away from the title in the bottom
of the ninth, but with one out Greenbaum reached on a wild pitch
after striking out. Greenbaum stole second and went to third as
the throw sailed into center. Greenbaum scored the tying run as
Hamby uncorked his fifth wild pitch of the game.
Hamby opened the top of the tenth with a high chopper that
bounced into left for a single. Sean Lanier followed with a
single that sent Hamby to third. Hamby scored three pitches
later on a passed ball.
In the bottom of the tenth, Hamby walked Scott Deery to lead off
the inning but then struck out the side to end the game and the
series.
As Hamby retired Cory Rosner on a swinging strike for the final
out, the Twins mobbed their ace on the mound. Hamby, who went
3-0 in the playoff and added eight hits and three RBI, was named
playoff MVP.
The Twins' victory marked the fourth straight season in which a
different team has won the Celestial Division championship.
Celestial Series-Game 2: The
Hallandale Twins knotted the best of three Celestial Series at
one game a piece with an 8-3 win over the Boca Raton Bocaneers
at Fort Lauderdale Stadium, Saturday afternoon.
Alex Cardenas, Mike Connell, and Dennis Morra delivered RBI
singles in the Twins' four run third inning to erase the
Bocaneers' 3-2 lead.
Adam Hamby, who pitched a complete game for the win, silenced
the Bocaneer bats the rest of the way. Hamby allowed one earned
run on five hits, walked nine, and struck out eight in
registering the victory.
Doc Guida went the distance for the 'Neers and took the loss
after surrendering six earned runs on 10 hits. Guida walked two
and did not strike out a batter.
Danny Griffin, Connell, and Morra all had two hits and an RBI to
lead the Twins' offense.
Steve Daglia had three hits and an RBI to pace the Bocaneers.
The Twins can post their first league title, while the Bocaneers
can claim their second, with a win in the decisive Game 3.
Celestial Series-Game 1: The Boca
Raton Bocaneers took a one game to none lead in the best of
three Celestial Series with a 9-3 win on Sunday.
Kevin Brown pitched eight strong innings, allowing three runs on
nine hits, to record the win. Brown, an almost certain lock for
the season's Best Pitcher Award, walked four, hit a batter, and
struck out 12.
Danny Griffin started for the Twins and took the loss despite
pitching well. Griffin worked five and two thirds innings and
surrendered three earned runs on nine hits.
After setting down the Bocaneers in order in the bottom of the
first, Griffin ran into trouble in the second. Scott Deery had
the first of his three hits, a lead off single, to get things
rolling. Jon Solovy followed with the first of his four hits, a
single. Eric Raskin walked to load the bases and then Brad Weiss
coaxed a walk out of Griffin to drive in a run. The Bocaneers
squandered an opportunity for a big inning when Solovy was an
easy out at the plate when Cory Rosner missed on a squeeze
attempt. Griffin eventually got Rosner on a fly out and then,
after a botched pop up reloaded the bases, retired Tracy
Greenbaum on a pop out to short to escape the inning only down
one run.
The Swashbucklers added a run in the third. Steve Daglia led off
with a single, but was forced at second on a grounder off the
bat of Danny Williams. Deery's double sent Williams to third and
he scored on Solovy's bloop base hit.
The Twins finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth.
Tony Caserio was hit by a pitch leading off the inning and then
scored when Roberto Lastra triple into the right field corner.
Having cut the deficit in half, the Twins could not knot the
score despite having a runner on third with none out and the
heart of their order due up. Brown worked out of an eventual
bases loaded jam without permitting another run in the inning.
In the sixth, the Bocaneers scored four runs, driving Griffin
from the box in the process. Eric Raskin led off by drawing a
walk and moved to second on a single by Weiss. Cory Rosner's
single to center scored Raskin and, when centerfielder Brian
Karembelas uncorked a wild throw, both Weiss and Rosner advanced
a base. Griffin recovered to retire Doc Guida on a line out and
Greenbaum on a pop up, but when shortstop Tony Caserio kicked
Steve Daglia's potential inning ending grounder, Weiss scored.
Williams followed with a two run single to give the 'Neers a 6-1
lead and chase Griffin from the mound.
The Twins did not go quietly however, scoring twice in the top
of the seventh. RBI singles by Griffin and Mike Connell brought
the Twins to within 6-3.
A three run rally in the bottom of the eighth all but
extinguished any hope for the Twins, however, as Daglia and
Solovy drove in a run each with a single. Daglia scored on a
wild pitch.
The Twins will need a win in Game 2 to stay alive, while the
Bocaneers can wrap up their second championship with one more
win.
Twins Top A's In Play-In Round: The
Hallandale Twins will make their first appearance in the
Celestial Division finals after defeating the defending champion
Oakland Park A's, 15-3, in the play-in round.
Adam Hamby scattered three hits, pitching a complete game, and
drove in three runs with a triple and a two run single for the
Twins.
Brian Karembelas broke out of a season long slump and stroked
three doubles and drove in two runs. Danny Griffin added three
hits and a pair of RBI, Danny Caserio had two doubles and an
RBI, and Tony Caserio had two hits and two RBI.
Brett Lancaster started for the A's, but only lasted two innings
and surrendered three earned runs on seven hits, and took the
loss.
The Twins broke open the game with a nine run fifth inning.
