Celestial Division's 2005 Spring/Summer Season Awards And All Star Team Announced

October 5, 2005 (Federal League Wire Service)

The League Awards Committee has announced the winners of the Celestial Division's 2005 Spring/Summer season awards and the division's all star team.
Giacco Of A's Named MVP: Glenn Giacco, catcher of the champion Oakland Park A's was honored as the league's Most Valuable Player.
Giacco hit a solid .400 while leading the division in RBI. Giacco also provided stellar defense, throwing out a division leading 37% of stolen base attempts.
Steve Daglia of the Boca Raton Bocaneers finished second in a close vote. Daglia, the Bocaneers shortstop, won the division's batting and slugging titles.
Papini Wins Best Pitcher Award: Bobby Papini of the Oakland Park A's was selected as the winner of the Best Pitcher Award. This was the second time that Papini has won the honor.
Papini went 4-0 with a division best 2.27 ERA for the pennant winning A's.
Kevin Brown, 3-1 with a 2.84 ERA for the Bocaneers, and A.J Shiver finished behind Papini in the voting.
Lancaster Tabbed As Division's Best Manager: Duane Lancaster, who led the Oakland Park A's to its second regular season pennant and its first Celestial Series championship was unanimously voted the division's Best Manager Award.
A's Neville Wins As Division's Best Newcomer Award: George Neville, slugging third baseman for the champion A's was a unanimous choice as the winner of the division's Best Newcomer Award. Neville finished second in the batting race and tied for third in RBI in his first campaign.
Rodriguez Of A's Win Sportsmanship Award: Although there were many deserving candidates for the award, no league observer could argue with the selection of Oakland Park A's outfielder Joseph Rodriguez as winner of this season's Sportsmanship Award.
In addition to helping the A's to their first title, Rodriguez exemplified the Federal League spirit in his approach to the game and represented the league with class each time he stepped on the field..
A.J. Shiver Named Playoff MVP: Justin Shiver who pitched a complete game to win the deciding game of the Celestial Series was named the Most Valuable Player of the playoffs.

The Celestial Division's all star team is as follows:
1B  Josh Brier, Indians
2B  Brad Zieve, Indians
SS  Steve Daglia, Bocaneers
3B  George Neville, A's
OF  Lionel Laverity, Twins
OF  Tracy Greenbaum, Bocaneers
OF  Albert Garcia, A's
P  Bobby Papini, A's
C  Jake Brier, Indians
DH  Casey McCarthy, Indians

Celestial Series, Game 2-A's Beat Bocaneers, Sweep Series: The Oakland Park A's won their first ever Celestial Division championship with a 6-2 win over the defending champion Boca Raton Bocaneers in Game 2 of the best of three Celestial Series.
A.J. Shiver pitched a complete game nine hitter for the A's, outdueling the Bocaneers' Jimmy Dingus. Shiver walked five and struck out six.
The A's got the early lead, scoring three runs in the first on an RBI double by Paul Benjamin and RBI singles by Shiver and Glenn Giacco. The Lancastermen then added two more runs in the second on a two run single by Shiver that scored Benjamin and Vladimir Diaz.
Scott Deery's RBI single in the bottom of the third got the Bocaneers on the board, but the A's scored next in the seventh when Shiver walked and then later scored on a balk by Dingus. The Bocanners closed the scoring in the bottom of the seventh with an unearned run.
The Bocaneers tried one last rally in the ninth, but Shiver retired Tracy Greenbaum and Steve Daglia on flyouts to end the threat, the game, and the series.
Shiver, who went five for eight with four RBI in the series was named the division's Playoff MVP.
Celestial Series, Game 1-A's Blast Bocaneers: The Oakland Park A's now stand one win away from capturing their first Celestial Division championship after posting a 13-9 win over the defending champion Boca Raton Bocaneers in Game 1 of the best of three Celestial Series, played Monday night.
Bob Papini pitched seven effective innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits, for the win.
Papini received more than ample offensive support as the A's battered Bocaneers starter Doc Guida for 11 runs, seven earned, on 13 hits in seven innings.
George Neville led the hit parade, collecting four hits. Chris Bartzokis contributed a pair of two run doubles and Vladimir Diaz added three hits for the victors.
Tracy Greenbaum and Steve Daglia paced the Bocaneer offense with three hits each. Greenbaum scored four runs and Daglia drove home two.
The A's can clinch the title with a win in Game 2, scheduled for Saturday.
Bocaneers Blank Tribe In Play-In: The Boca Raton Bocaneers won the Celestial Division's play-in in decisive fashion with a 10-0 whitewash of the Coconut Creek Indians.
Kevin Brown tossed six shutout innings, scattering four hits and four walks while striking out seven, and coasted to victory.
The Bocaneers provided Brown with ample run support, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the second inning. A pair of Tribe errors, a two run double by Jody Eaton, and an RBI double by Scott Deery combined to give the Swashbucklers a formidable early advantage.
Deery added another RBI double in the fourth as the lead increased to 8-0. Steve Daglia's third hit of the game, a two run double in the fifth, made it a 10-0 game.
Justin Shiver started for the Tribe and pitched better than his final line would indicate. Shiver, betrayed by his defense, was charged with all 10 runs, three earned, on 12 hits in five innings. At least two of those 12 hits included balls that were misplayed in the outfield.
As poor as the Indians played defense behind Shiver, their base running was probably worse as they continually ran themselves out of whatever few scoring chances they had. The loss was the fifth in a row for the Tribe.
The Bocaneers, last season's defending Celestial Series champions, will meet the regular season pennant winning Oakland Park A's in this season's Celestial Series with Game 1 of the best of three series scheduled for Monday night.
