Indians Crush Royals To Win Championship: The Coconut Creek Indians pounded out 17 hits and drew 13 walks as they romped to a 23-11 win over the Palm Beach Royals to sweep the best of three Celestial Series. The Indians became the first team in division history to win the title twice.
After the Royals took an early 3-0 lead, the Indians scored four in the second off Royals' starter Burt Anderson. Casey McCarthy's RBI double got the Tribe on the board, Tony Moreno's two run single tied the score, and Octavio Ramos' RBI single gave the Native Americans the lead.
The Royals retook the lead in the top of the third on an RBI single by Brad Monaco, but the Indians roared back with eight runs in the bottom of the third to grab a commanding 12-5 lead. The Indians added nine more runs in the fourth as the battered the Royals pitching staff. During the season, the Royals had led the division in virtually every positive pitching category.
Jeff Mathis led the Indians' barrage, going five for five with two home runs and five RBI. Ramos added a grand slam and went two for two with five RBI. Moreno was three for four with four RBI. Jorge Olivo tied a league playoff record by drawing five walks. After the game, Ramos was voted the winner of the Playoff MVP Award.
Monaco led the Royals, going three for three.
Justin Shiver went the distance for the Indians and picked up the win. Anderson was charged with the loss.
The Indians, their three season rebuilding phase complete, celebrated their victory by giving manager Bill Caracofe a shower of ice water and Gatorade on the field.
Tribe Shock Royals In Game 1: The Coconut Creek Indians took a one game to none lead in the best of three Celestial Division finals with an 11-6 win over the Palm Beach Royals in the opening game of the series.
The Tribe scored six runs in the fifth inning to wipe out the Royals 4-0 lead. A two run single by Octavio Ramos tied the score and a two run double by Jake Brier gave the Indians the lead.
Brandon Hull, somewhat of a surprise choice as the Game 1 starter for the Indians, went six innings and earned the win after permitting three earned runs on nine hits.
Anthony Tomasi, an almost certain lock for the division's Best Pitcher Award, took the loss after allowing eight runs, all earned, on 11 hits. Tomasi struck out nine, but walked five and hit a batter. Casey McCarthy picked up a save with two innings of one run relief.
Brier led the Indians offense, getting three hits  and driving in four runs. Richie Flores aced the Royals with three hits.
The Indians can wrap up their second Celestial Division championship with a victory in Game 2 on Sunday. The Royals will seek to send the series to a third and final game.
The Indians will send Justin Shiver to the hill in Game 2, the Royals have not named a starter. Burt Anderson, despite pitching two innings of relief on Saturday, will most likely get the call.
Tribe Trounce A's In Play-In: The Coconut Creek Indians will play for the Celestial Division championship after they crushed the Oakland Park A's, 17-5, in the division's play-in round.
A large partisan crowd turned out to Sabal Pines Park and saw the Tribe score a playoff record 14 runs in the bottom of the fourth to wipe out the A's 5-3 lead.
Octavio Ramos had a three run home run and a sacrifice fly as the Indians batted around twice in the inning, sending 18 batters to the plate. Casey McCarthy had an RBI single during the rally and Danny Lopez added a two run single.
Justin Shiver, who pitched a complete game seven hitter, was the recipient of the Tribe's run support and coasted to the victory.
Brett Lancaster started for the A's and took the loss after yielding seven earned runs on seven hits in three and a third innings. Lancaster was particularly wild, walking two and hitting six batters.
The A's had surged into the lead after scoring four times in the top of the fourth. Rocky Garcia and Duane Lancaster had RBI ground outs and Jason Burns drove in two runs with a single, giving the A's a short lived two run advantage.
The Indians will meet the pennant winning Palm Beach Royals in the best of three Celestial Series, beginning on Saturday.
This marks the second straight season that the A's bowed out with a lopsided loss in the play-in game.
