Pinch runner Ron Nerf scored the winning run as the Bocaneers
failed to complete a potential inning ending double play in the
ninth. As the throw to first sailed high and wide, Nerf sped
home with the championship clinching run.
The Yanks had fallen behind early as the Bocaneers scored four
runs in the second inning. Doubles by Anthony Tomasi and Scott
Arenberg were augmented by a pair of Yankee errors as the 'Neers
assumed a 4-0 lead.
Brandon Hull's RBI single in the fifth gave the Corsairs a 5-0
advantage, but the Yanks narrowed the gap with two runs of their
own in the home half of the frame. Ken Silberling singled in one
run and Ed Wierda singled home another.
Bob Esposito's RBI single in the sixth brought the Yanks to with
5-3, but the 'Neers resumed a three run lead in the top of the
seventh on another RBI single by Hull.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Yanks tied the score, driving
Bocaneers' starter Doc Guida from the hill in the process. Luis
Soto's RBI single capped the three run rally.
The Yanks took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the
eighth. Working against reliever Tomasi, Miguel Franquiz opened
the frame with a single. Franquiz stole second and proceeded to
third as catcher Ryan Lohnes' throw sailed into center field.
Two batters later Franquiz scored the go ahead run on a
fielder's choice.
In the top of the ninth the 'Neers refused to go quietly. With
one out, Arenberg collected his third hit of the game to put the
tying run aboard. Mike Martin followed with a single to advance
Arenberg to second. After Eric Bigham bounced out attempting to
bunt for a hit, Tracy Greenbaum singled in Arenberg with the
tying run.
With Eric Raskin on in relief, Gary Cruz opened the bottom of
the ninth by working a walk. Nerf went in to pinch run and
advanced to second as Ray Asmar walked. Two batters later,
Luis Soto bounced into an apparent double play, but the 'Neers
were unable to complete the play as Nerf scored the winning run.
Joe Feller pitched a complete game for the Yanks and earned the
win. Feller allowed three earned runs on 12 hits, walking two,
hitting one, and striking out three.
Raskin took the loss.
After the game, the editors of South Florida Baseball Report
voted Ken Silberling as the Playoff MVP. Silberling had eight
hits in three post season games.
The Yankees will begin defense of the newly won crown when the
Fall/Winter season opens on October 19.
Game 1 Recap:
The Southern Yankees got another complete game postseason effort from Jeff
Eidleberg and rallied to defeat the two time defending champion Boca Raton
Bocaneers, 9-8 in Game 1 of the best of three Celestial Series.
Joe D'Arelli's RBI double tied the score and Bob Esposito's
sacrifice fly gave the Yanks the lead in the top of the ninth
after Skip Sisselman's team had squandered the lead in the
bottom of the eighth.
The Yanks opened their first trip to the series in good fashion,
scoring three runs against Bocaneer starter Jimmy Dingus in the
top of the first. Todd Collura was hit by a pitch with the bases
load to begin the scoring. Ken Silberling singled in another run
and Gary Cruz's RBI ground out gave the Yanks a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first, however, the 'Neers tied the score
with three runs of their own, highlighted by Kevin Brown's two
run double.
Miguel Franquiz's RBI single in the second put the Yanks ahead,
4-3, but in the bottom of the inning the Bocaneers scored twice
on a two run triple by Brandon Hull to move ahead, 5-4.
The Yanks tied the contest in the third on a sacrifice fly by
Ron Nerf.
In the fourth, the Yanks added another run on another RBI single
by Franquiz as they drove Dingus from the box. Doc Guida held
the Yanks in check until the eighth and allowed one run on five
hits in three and two thirds innings of relief.
Trailing 7-5 in the bottom of the eighth, the Corsairs staged a
three run rally. Tracy Greenbaum, Brandon Hull, Anthony Tomasi,
and Jimmy Dingus produced four straight singles to lead off the
frame tied the score. A sacrifice fly by Brown gave the
Bocaneers an 8-7 lead.
In the top of the ninth, Luis Soto led off and reached base
after being hit with an 0-2 pitch by Brown, who had taken over
for Guida in the eighth. D'Arelli stroked a double to right
center that scored Soto with the tying run, before scoring three
batters later on Esposito's sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the ninth, Eidleberg set the 'Neers down in
order to give the Yanks the game.
The Yanks will be searching for the series sweep and their first
team championship, while the Bocanners will look to even things
up in Game 2, scheduled for Sunday.
